1967 Nova

We just love solving bizarre problems caused by someone else.  This vehicle had a laundry list of problems and we resolved each of them, as always.  The worst problem being that it was pumping out a fine spray of oil that completely covered the bottom and back of the car, and most likely anyone following behind.  This was the case of right pan, wrong block.  This car originally came with a 327.  These engines were specially fit to these cars to clear the steering, and had a forward sump and long pickup to feed the oil pump.  Somewhere along the line, a 1980’s block was dropped in.  This resulted in two problems.  The block didn’t have the boss for the driver side dipstick, yet the pan was contoured out for it.  This resulted in a gaping hole where the dip stick would have been at the point where the pan and block came together.  Also the pan wouldn’t come up close enough to seal as the pump was too long and was hitting the bottom of the pan.  We welded a small flange to the pan where the gap for the dipstick was and stretched the pan where the pump was bottoming out.  This solved the oil spray problem.

The alternator long bolt was broken in the head, which required some surgical efforts to drill out and re-tap.  We had to keep it centered and not go too deep as the water jacket is right behind that boss.

The fuel line, several brake lines, and the master cylinder were bad and were replaced.  Also, the original valve covers were hitting on the rocker arms.  So we put newer style valve covers on and hooked up a PCV system as the engine also wasn’t properly vented.
