Lots of electrical problems on this one. And guess what? It had been to other shops! But you know what happened when it was brought to Route 66 Restorations, Inc? We resolved the problems. I used to re-wire fighter jets in the Air Force. Wiring on a 60’s car is a glorified flashlight, yet no-one except us appears to be able to able fix it. Well that’s good for us.
The electrical problems were all tail, brake, and turn light problems, the source of which were in the turn signal switch on the column. It had a few bad light sockets too. One problem, which another shop tried to fix, was a “non-problem”. The customer complained that the front parking lights worked in the half way out parking light position, but went out in the full on headlight position. All GM cars up to 1967 functioned this way. It was really kind of stupid, but that’s how they were designed. A simple jumper can make them come on.
Another problem was that the speedo bullet was leaking. Two problems here. One was that it had a bullet from a manual transmisson and this car was automatic. The other was that another shop had tried to stop the leak out of the drive gear with an “O” ring instead of a seal. Thank goodness for Route 66 Restorations, Inc. What would owners of these cars do without us?
