This 59 Cadillac came to Route 66 Restorations Inc., like so many other cars do, from another shop that just could not get it right. It took seconds to diagnose an incorrect firing order. Next was the worn out Rochester 4GC, worn throttle bushings, accelerator pump and linkages. We managed to snag an original, brand new, never used 1959 Rochester Reference Library carb refitted with new gaskets etc. which made this engine run great.
The transmission had a leak in the torque converter to front pump seal. Normally this is not a big deal unless it is in one of these ancient hydromatics. The torque converter is part of the transission and in order to access the seal you actually disassemble the torque converter from the ring gear end and work backwards toward the transmission removing snap rings and other delights to get to the problem.
The brakes were no surprise. Neglect and lack of use, not to mention Michigan winters, had taken their toll on the wheel cylinders. One of the rear e-brake spacer bars was missing so we made one, which is easier than trying to find one. The crown jewel in the brake system was the coiled steel line that someone with a death wish fabricated to replace one of the rear rubber lines.
We fixed it all!
